Petchitecture 2013

It is my pleasure once again, to donate to the PAWS San Francisco signature fundraiser, Petchitecture.  Founded eighteen years ago, leading Bay Area architects and designers create one-of-a-kind pet habitats to raise awareness and funding in support of the many PAWS programs and services provided to those in need.  JoeysCoat is honored to join in the support of this important work.

The 2013 event, An Afternoon Affair At The St. Regis San Francisco, will be held May 5th.

Here is a preview of the edgy fashion design JoeysCoat, repurposed from vintage, thrifted and gifted materials, Dana created exclusively for Petchitecture 2013 .

Apple Store Providence...

While pondering iPad options, Sean, the sales associate helping me, asked about my primary purpose for the sleek new tool.  I told him about my company.  We viewed the slideshow together and it became quite obvious the newest model was most appropriate for my needs.  Decision made.

On to the technical/training associate, Gabriel - a kind and very patient young man.  During introductions, Sean told Gabriel about JoeysCoat.  Gabriel then walked me through the necessary steps to set up my machine for the company.   As I followed his directive, I found myself engaged in a conversation with him about his inherited pup, Jarvis.  Jarvis is Gabriel's first and only dog.  One whose background included two stints at the “Pound”, now enjoys going running, sleeping curled up in his owner's bed, and sitting on the sofa watching from the window for Gabriel to return home from his workday.  Viewing iPhone snaps of Jarvis, it was clear he had most definitely carved a forever home in his human’s heart.

While I was busy learning about my new toy, my favorite shopping friend chatted with a couple next to me - kindred technical novices becoming acquainted with their new Apple product, their Cairn Terrier faithfully waiting in silence.  The pups lovely owner, Peach, asked for a JoeysCoat business card, describing the canine display of excitement when "the clothes" come out.  At once, she recalled the JoeysCoat article in the Seattle Times sharing she had cut it out and saved it.  Gratified, it was apparent this is a very special dog with very special humans.

Not only was I schooled on how to use an iPad.  I learned that validation comes in the form of many messengers - taught in the midst of a sea of shoppers.

"Jarvis"

It is a privilege to hear the stories.  Each one bearing the common theme – dogs change our lives in only the very best ways.

Fiona...Where Are You...?

So far away…

Doesn’t anybody stay in one place anymore…

It would be so fine to see your face at my door…

But you’re so far away…

Beautiful South American Ikat Designs...

Ikat is considered one of the oldest forms of textile decoration.  The patterns, created by the complex process of weaving and dyeing, are common to many world cultures both past and present.

Central and South American Ikat weaving and dyeing is believed to date as far back as pre-Columbian times.  Current day, Ikat production is still quite common in Argentina, Bolivia, Ecuador, Guatemala and Mexico.

While some Ikat design appears blurred, others resemble printed patterns rather than woven cloth - the finer the pattern the more highly skilled weaver.  Along with skill-level and personal preference, design motif may have ethnic, ritual or symbolic meaning.  Or, perhaps it embodies one’s level of status, wealth or prestige in life.  Some cultures believe the cloth holds magical powers.

I, personally, am humbled by the dedication of time to the history and tradition of the process.  It is the aesthetic appeal of Ikat that catches my eye and keeps me wanting more…

"Dress-Up" - JoeysCoat Style...

Carpetbagger Joey

Small

Cotton chenille brocade coat and tab.
Vintage French yellow and silver metallic belt, loops and trim.
Bakelite buckle.
Bakelite, Celluloid and Vintage Plastic buttons.

An imaginative mix of old-fashioned grandeur and colorful art – I am referring to the image of the Carpetbagger JoeysCoat, not of me playing “dress-up”.  There is, however, a distinct similarity between the refined quality and good taste of Dana’s design and the magnificent vintage gown I was allowed to play in as a child.

The gown was but one of many belonging to my dear piano teacher, Miss White – a remarkable woman who embraced me as her own.   A graduate of Julliard, Miss White lived directly across from my family home.  When she moved to the neighborhood she purchased three adjoining plots of land - The center, for her architectural masterpiece in which she lived with her Cairn and Rat Terriers, Happy and Gay; the lot to the south for her pool and gardens; the lot to the north for the kids in the neighborhood, complete with a baseball diamond and Badminton net.

Born in 1926, Miss White was thirty years my senior, yet we played together like two kids as we walked the dogs, rode horses, swam, gardened, played hide and seek, and my favorite, dress up.  There were more serious moments as well.  She introduced me to National Public Radio, read to me in French, taught me “proper manners” and to genuinely appreciate the fine things life has to offer.  When she practiced the piano, I would lay on my back beneath the massive Steinway with eyes closed, listening to every note.  Once she had completed her personal work-out for the day, I would hop up onto the bench of a second Grand facing her.  We would play classical duets, stopping only long enough to make certain I corrected my mistakes.

The last time I saw Miss White I was expecting my youngest son.  That was more than thirty-five years ago.  I wrote her a letter in 1999 to express to her the important role she played in my life.  I was delighted when I received her reply in which she described in detail her many adventures.   The letter was typewritten with her familiar signature at the bottom.  It was the last letter I would receive.

Miss White taught me so much more than merely to play the piano.  I am thankful for the lessons learned, and most of all, for her extraordinary friendship.
